Bitter Past. Bitter Kola.

Bitter Past. Bitter Kola was a solo show by Marcio Carvalho, reflecting about public space colonial objects and how they influence our autobiographical and collective memories of past events. Works in sculptures, film, photography and performance questioned the economy of remembered embedded in Lisbon based statues and monuments. Carvalho brought from Cameroon the believe that iconic objects have to be constantly touched to keep their potential for continuously becoming. By bringing this idea of touch and its relational logic's into Portuguese statues the artist aimed at creating opportunities to revisit fragments of the Portuguese colonial past, to add other memories onto their institutional narratives.

Bitter Past. Bitter Kola was presented by MUTE Gallery, Lisbon, curated by Manuel Furtado
