Echoes of Freedom - a monument

Echoes of Freedom – a monument is a participatory work that grow with the many visits by various groups from the city. Their ability to remember collectively and propose echoes and exercises of freedom was fundamental to maintain the life of this monument. Freedom was taken as a synonymous of difference, diversity of memories and cosmologies, plurality of voices and active listening. This monument consists of a library and a bibliography of authors who think of freedom as a constant exercise of the present, and a series of drawings by Márcio Carvalho that function as footnotes of the literature on display. The various groups have access to notebooks where they can leave their ideas and marks of their passages through writing and drawing. Finally, a vegetable garden was part of the monument, where the people of Brasília are able to freely cultivate, care for, harvest and use a wide range of vegetables, medicinal plants and fruits for collective consumption (and as a way of providing encounters).

This counter monument proposes to move away from the logic of erecting objects, closed in their narratives and belief systems and focus on the appropriation of that space, to take care of it, to experience it as an open, participatory and continuous gesture of freedom.
