Falling Thrones - Olympic Series
European, contemporary societies have been tailored as nations that follow heroes. Most of these heroes, portrayed in monuments, are men who enslaved, oppressed and stole the culture, the dignity and the memory of distinct peoples from different world geographies. European privileged histories, written mostly by the so called “victors”, and its official narratives, are no longer the sole representatives of freedom, diversity and equality. Therefore, Europeans need other stories and other peoples they can pursue as role models - those who fought in the past, or fight in the present for a fair life. Thus, Falling Thrones project keeps imagining other protagonists of history, portraited as athletes, in the dispute for memory and remembrance. This drawing series uses Olympic games and their structures of power to compete for other stories and peoples to be remembered. Each athlete used in the drawings is a woman or a man that fought against colonial rulers. The drawings show them sporting statues and their hegemonic histories and resisting Western dominant narratives.
