How to Escape From History
“History (with a capital H) ends where the histories of those peoples once reputed to be without history come together. History is a highly functional fantasy of the West, originating at precisely that time when it alone ‘made’ the history of the world.” Édouard Glissant

How To Escape From History was a site specific performance made in the old prison jail in Bergen, Norway. Carvalho used the premises of the prison as a metaphor to talk about the ways history is produced and implemented, and how difficult is to escape from its hegemonic truth. Distinct strategies used by inmates to exchange goods between themselves and different escape maps were studied beforehand and used in the performance.
The performance "How To Escape From History" was presented at the Bergen Performance Art Festival, Norway, curated by Kurt Johannessen and Rita Marhaug
